to help increase the number, quality, business volume, and profits of black African-American owned businesses in Mississippi. However, this network is not exclusively for nor limited to black businesses owners.
In Mississippi we have a tremendous opportunity to create and grow black-owned businesses. A 2006 report by the U.S. Minority Business Development Agency, based on 2002 information, gave the following statistics on black-owned businesses in Mississippi:
a. According to that report, in Mississippi, no minority group has reached a level of business ownership or gross receipts that matches their population percentage.
b. Mississippi’s population is approximately 40% black; of 187,000 Mississippi businesses, 25,000, or 14%, are black-owned; black businesses have 1.3% of the state’s employees, and generated $1.3 billion dollars- about 2% of total business revenue.
c. If minority business activity in Mississippi matched the state’s minority population percentage in 2002, the number of minority firms in the state would have exceeded 74,000, and they would have generated over $25 billion in gross receipts.
These figures support there is a lot of need and a lot of opportunity for the black community in Mississippi to step up and increase efforts to create businesses, jobs, and wealth in Mississippi.
